The tasting room

Fourteen seats in a hay barn, four days a week.

The room is at the top of Quarry Road, in the barn the wine is made in. There is one long table, a bar with six stools, and whoever is working that day pouring. It has never been hired for a wedding and it never will be.

The last flight is poured at 4:15, so the room can empty by five and the cellar work can start again. Closed January and February while the vines are pruned. From mid-September to mid-October we open Saturday and Sunday only, because everyone is picking.

    The fee does not come off anything. It pays for Tomás's Saturday.

03  /  Getting here

Twenty-three minutes from Marchgate, the last of it single track.

By car. Take the B4350 out of Marchgate for nineteen minutes and turn left at the red phone box that no longer has a phone in it. Quarry Road is 1.2 km of single track with three passing places — if you meet the tractor, it has right of way, and it knows it.

Parking. On the gravel by the barn, not on the grass. The grass strip is the frost drain for Coldfoot, and the ruts from one wet Saturday take a whole summer to settle.

By train and taxi. Marchgate station, then a taxi. There is no rank and no bus, and the Marchgate taxi will not wait, so book the return when you book the ride up. We will call it for you at the end if you ask at the bar.

Satnav sends you to the farm below us. Use LD3 9QXand ignore it for the last turn; look for the drystone wall with yellow in it.

04  /  What to expect

Six things worth knowing before you set off.

  1. 01

    It is a working barn

    The room is the old hay barn, and in April it is twelve degrees inside. Bring a jumper. Between May and August the doors stay open onto the yard and the swallows come in.

  2. 02

    Wear shoes you can walk in

    The yard is gravel and the vineyard is slate. Heels have gone badly. Quarry & Cellar walks a 28% slope on The Ladder — boots, please, or we will lend you a pair in sizes 5 to 11.

  3. 03

    Spit if you are driving

    There is a bucket at every place and nobody will look at you. The Short Walk pours about 25ml a wine, so four wines together are roughly one small glass.

  4. 04

    Dogs outside, children inside

    Dogs are welcome in the yard, where there is water and a tie ring, but not in the barn. Children are welcome anywhere and get apple juice pressed at the farm next door.

  5. 05

    Step-free, mostly

    The barn is level from the yard and has an accessible toilet. The yard is compacted gravel. Tell us when you book and we will keep the table nearest the door.

  6. 06

    Buying, and carrying

    Every wine on the range is for sale in the room, card only — the reader works even when your phone does not. We ship anywhere on the mainland for £9 a case.
